With the passing of Neil Armstrong August 25 at age 82, we dedicate this month’s SNAP to a look at the visually striking design of the Neil Armstrong Museum, located in Wapakoneta, Ohio.

Travelers along Interstate 75 in Ohio can’t miss the odd shaped building just off the freeway in Wapakonenta. It sort of looks like the moon rising above the horizon. The building houses the Neil Armstrong Museum, dedicated to the life of the first man on the moon and the exploration of space in general.

The museum opened July 20, 1972 in Wapakoneta, Ohio. Armstrong grew up in Wapakoneta, a city half way between Cincinnati and Toledo. Much of the building is underground, surrounded by an earthen mound with a large fifty-six feet wide dome clearly visible at the center. The design is refered to as a “futuristic moon-base design” and is meant to evoke images of the moon rising over the horizon.
