The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) is responsible for promoting and developing business opportunities for Blu-ray Disc™ – the BDA’s optical disc format for high definition audio-video and high capacity data software applications.

In February 2002, a large group of companies announced the introduction of the Blu-ray Disc (BD) format. The new format offered an immense storage capacity (up to 50GB) that was well suited for High Definition video recording and distribution, as well as for storing large amounts of data. The format shared the same form factors as CD and DVD optical discs allowing for backwards compatibility.

In 2005, the Blu-ray Disc founders announced the creation of the Blu-ray Disc Association. The Blu-ray Disc Association, or BDA, re-incorporated the Blu-Ray Disc Founders group, but expanded to include voluntary membership open to any corporation or organization with an interest in creating, upholding and/or promoting the BD formats.

Those organizations engaged in research, development and/or manufacturing of any BD products or interested in developing and improving the BD formats were also encouraged to pursue membership. Today the group says it welcomes any company wanting to learn more about the format as it evolves.

According to it’s website, the aim of the BDA is to:

  • Develop Blu-ray Disc specifications
  • Ensure Blu-ray Disc products are implemented by licensees according to the intent of the specifications
  • Promote wide adoption of Blu-ray Disc formats
  • Provide useful information to those who are interested in supporting Blu-ray Disc formats

The BDA has approximately 100 member companies. Its Board of Directors consists of individuals affiliated with the following member companies: Dolby Laboratories Inc., DTS Inc., Hitachi, Ltd., Intel Corporation, Koninklijke Philips N.V., LG Electronics Inc., Microsoft Corporation, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Oracle Corporation, Panasonic Corporation, Pioneer Corporation, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Sharp Corporation, Sony Corporation, Technicolor, Toshiba Corporation, Twentieth Century Fox, Universal Studios , The Walt Disney Studios, and Warner Bros.
